Do we pick our sport?

I’m just over six foot (I can’t quite call myself six foot one, but I feel that six foot doesn’t quite do me justice; thank the Lord I wasn’t one inch shorter or I’d be five foot eleven, on the cusp of six foot, and no one wants that kind of uncertainty in life). I fluctuate between 92 and 96kg, seasonally almost.

If I need to make weight for Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ), I need to get to 91kg. Christmas, holidays or periods when I’m writing a book, I will usually be more sedentary and, to be quite honest, if I don’t need to diet, I won’t. At that weight, for my height I’m pretty dense – according to my last DEXA scan my bone density is nearly off the charts and, touch wood, I haven’t broken a bone since puberty.

If someone was to look at me in a lineup, they would straight away think I’m a rugby player. I played for fifteen years, back row, which means my job was to run into people fairly hard, tackle anyone running hard towards me and stick my head in places the pretty boys wouldn’t.

Now, here’s the interesting part: people will think I’m broad and dense because I played rugby, but in fact, it’s the other way round. I played rugby because of my physique. You don’t pick your sport, your sport picks you. People aren’t tall because they play basketball; typically, the taller players excel being closer to the basket and having longer reach and ability to pass and catch at a greater height.

Long-distance runners generally have long legs and short torsos. Swimmers often are tall and the opposite of that, with long torsos and shorter legs. As you’ll start to realize, in some cases the athlete works hard to develop their skill for their sport, but a lot of the time they will kick with the wind of their genetics, height, weight, etc.

As already discussed, some people are naturally able to remain more lean than others. Although again, a huge amount of this is down to habits, we still need to take into account the genetic phenomenon here and there. What I find unfortunate is that if we see personal training as a sport, I can’t help but feel that we’re falling for the same misconception that we look the way we do because of our sport.

We don’t. And being in good shape and looking good without a top on are not good enough credentials for a fairly complex profession that has the ability to turn the quality of lives around. Those who have the potential to change lives can qualify with an online course for a few-thousand pounds and a few hours of spare time.

I think we need to question whether people are in the profession because they want to change the direction of the obesity epidemic and to help people live better quality lives. Or they’ve ended up in the profession due to the fact that they’re in good shape. Not to say trainers in good shape can’t be great PTs. But what if I told you I was hiring for a job?

(These are the unfortunate hours of a self-employed PT.) I get ten applicants. They come in. Can you imagine if I asked them all to take their clothes off and picked the one in best shape? If that’s the criterion for finding the best possible trainer, stop the world, I’m getting off here. I recently trained at a gym in South-west London and, upon checking the Personal Trainer board, I counted that over 80 per cent of the trainers had their tops off in their chosen display photo. They’d chosen that as their picture to market themselves as a coach. We don’t pick our doctor, nurse, physio or driving instructors on how they look with their tops off. I just think it’s a shame we select our personal trainer on those credentials.
